What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a modern martial art, characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name Taekwondo. Taekwondo is often translated as " the Way of Hand and Foot." Tae = " Foot " or " to Kick " or " to Jump " K'won = " Fist " or " to Strike or Block with Hand " Do = " The Way Of " or " Art " | Put this together and Taekwondo means: "The Art of Punching and Kicking" or "The Art of Unarmed Combat."
Taekwondo is often characterized by unity of body-mind-spirit-life, as well as unity of poomse(forms) and confrontation. When performing Taekwondo, one should make the mind peaceful and synchronized with movement, extending this harmony with life and society. This is how the principle of physical movement, mind training, and life become one.
Disciplines of TaekwondoTaekwondo has four disciplines: - Patterns
- Sparring
- Self-Defense
- Break Test
It is the combination of these four disciplines that make the art of Taekwondo. Objectives of Taekwondo:- To develop an appreciation for Taekwondo as a sport and an art.
- To achieve physical fitness through positive participation.
- To improve mental discipline and emotional equality.
- To learn self-defense skills.
- To develop a sense of responsibility for one self and others.
Taekwondo is primarily a kicking art, often with a greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the art. Taekwondo stylists tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. It is a hard/soft, external, fairly linear style and is known for being very powerful. There is a lot of competition work in many dojangs. Training tends to emphasize sparring, but also has forms, and the basics are important as well.

Taekwondo (Advanced)
This class focuses on very hard training and advanced skills.
|
Habgido (All Belts - Advanced)
Learning how to use your body as a weapon is fundamental to the practice of Habgido. Proper use of your body as a weapon includes applying force to your assailant in a manner that is (1) effective and (2) does not cause damage to yourself.
Strikes may be delivered by a number of different body surfaces. This includes the use of hands, feet, arms, legs and head. Rigorously learning and practicing proper strike techniques are important to your development as a martial artist. Should you ever need to use Habgido to defend yourself or others, your body will respond in the way you trained it.
If you learn proper strike techniques and practice them with concentration and rigorous adherence to what you learned, your body will automatically deliver effective strikes when confronted by a need to defend yourself. If, on the other hand, you practice Habgido in a haphazard, sloppy and casual manner, your body will be ineffective as a weapon and surviving a threatening confrontation will depend far more on luck than on your neglected skill.

Gumdo
Gumdo, by definition, is the practicing of Korean sword techniques. The Gagum (wooden) and Joogdo (Bamboo) swords are used in the classroom/dojang setting. Real swords (made of steel or other metals) are only used for special demonstrations of the practitioner's swordsmanship. Like Taekwondo and Habgido, Gumdo's martial arts history goes back thousands of years. As well as learning how to defend and attack with a sword, the Gumdo practitioner gains upper body strength as well as gaining agility and mental alertness.
|
Self-Defense
In the Self-Defense program, the students will learn what to do to defend themselves and others during real-life scenerios or events. Self-Defense techniques are taught to everyone - at all age & skill levels.
